Alana Nichols likes to lighten the mood before a ski race.

Early last March, while most Americans were sleeping, the 31-year-old six-time Paralympic medalist was half a world away perched at the starting gate for the women’s downhill of the 2014 Winter Paralympics.

Just seconds away from the start, she leans over to coach Kevin Jardeen and asks, “How’s my hair?”

They are merely jesters in the court of ski. For one day each spring people laugh, and jeer, and cheer for them, but few truly understand.

For they are the pro pond skimmers, an elite group of intrepid skiers and riders around the globe that put body before wits in an icy quest to reach the far side of a pool-sized slushy.

Scott Loveless of Copper Mountain is one such skimmer, and his time to shine like an ice berg is coming up April 18 as Copper Mountain hosts the 4th Annual Red Bull SlopeSoakers. We recently caught up with Scott to learn more about the life of a pond skimmer. READ OUR Q&A WITH SCOTT

You can learn a lot about someone through social media. When I caught up with Jamie Stanton this summer, I visited his Twitter account where he had Retweeted this note from Joel Osteen, a popular televangelist:

 “You were never created to live an average, get-by life…You have royalty in your blood. Winning is in your DNA.”
 

Those words are easy to assimilate no matter what your religious or spiritual leanings.
